HOW TO WIRE ART FOR HANGING
DO:
Finish off your work completely by using fixative (for pastels, pencils, etc.), sealer or varnish (for acrylics or oils, etc.). Be sure that it is dry in time for the Ingathering.
Use your discretion when dealing with the edges of the canvas: there is no rule, it’s a matter of personal preference. Raw edges are sometimes appropriate in abstract or modern pieces. At the very least, be sure to seal the edges with varnish to prevent staining from handling.
Make sure to sign your artwork. You may sign the back as well and include the title of the piece, the year, and contact information. Make sure to display this information on the canvas, as opposed to the stretcher bars (the artwork will survive longer than the stretcher bars.)
Use D-Rings (below). This method will work on framed artwork or on stretched canvases. Using this method will help the artwork rest flush with the wall. D-Rings will accommodate the rail-hanging system and traditional hanging hooks.
Use the following steps to install the D-Ring system:
Measure the height of your work. Make a mark 1/3 from the top of the work.
Use an awl to start a hole where you want to place the screw.
Screw the D-rings into place on both sides of the work, facing the peak of the “D” upwards.
Use the appropriate size (or weight) wire, especially on heavier pieces. DO NOT make it tight!
Tension on the wire and stress on the frame increase drastically when angle of the wire is less than 30 deg
Place your business card on the back of the piece (optional, but recommended).
DON’T:
Present work that has dust or has unraveling canvas threads.
Submit wet pieces.
Expect others to ensure that your art looks presentable.
Submit unframed Studio canvases (profile [or edge] sizes 5/8 -7/8”.) No exceptions.

Kipaipai, meaning “to encourage and inspire,” is a special program that focuses on professional practices in areas of gallery representation and museum exhibitions, self-promotion, use of social media in promotion, the importance of relevant critical writing, presentation, and identifying and strategizing personal/professional goals. This workshop will help participants to immediately build their professional network through community and organic connections based on relationships and shared resources. Through the retreat’s private one-on-one sessions and group meetings, students will have the rare opportunity to meet with a team of guest professionals - primarily from the greater Los Angeles area. They will include curators, gallerists, art critics, art writers, art dealers, social media experts in the arts and more.
